Dealing with noisy neighbours

People are more likely to have conflicts with their neighbours than anyone else, and noise is the most common cause of those disputes. Noisy neighbours can make the homes of many individuals feel uninhabitable. Legal redress is available, but should be as the last resort.

Noisy neighbours can dampen any living experience, especially if it constantly disrupts you. When we move into an apartment, we want our space to be homely, peaceful and a haven to escape after a long day at work. The last thing we want is to hear the whole argument of the couple next door or the lyrics of the song they are blowing through the walls. If it is going to happen most nights, it can start grinding on us and asking ourselves the question, how am I going to deal with it?

Well, here are a few suggestions to help keep those noisy neighbours at bay:

Communication is key

It sounds like a clichรฉ but talking to your neighbourโ€™s is typically healthy. One in three persons found that this instantly fixed the issues. Surprisingly often, individuals do not even know that they are irritating, and few individuals are careless about others around them; others are simply ignorant.

So how do I do it?

For starters, approaching them in the middle of a party while they are drunk could well be counterproductive. Instead of knocking awkwardly at their entrance, it would be easier to trap them in a public place and speak with them there, or over the garden fence.

Being calm and reasonable with most individuals gets better results than being confrontational. The moral high ground is in you; make sure you keep it.

When you approach them, it is a good idea to have three examples, complete with dates, of when they were excessively noisy to hand. Tell them how you were disturbed by the noise, too, but do not be accusatory.

No success? Contact the local authority

You might consider getting the local authority involved if you have spoken to your neighbour and they are still making noise. Be mindful that it would increase tensions and get the council involved and the conflict could get out of proportion and the rivals will potentially end up in court. You should still be mindful that all public reports against loud neighbours would go on record.
